In 2021, the Colorado legislature prospectively ended the practice of sentencing people convicted of felony murder to mandatory life without parole (LWOP). The Sentencing Project joined a brief urging the Colorado Supreme Court to extend relief to people currently serving LWOP for felony murder, arguing that mandatory LWOP for felony murder is racially unjust and unconstitutional under the Colorado and U.S. Constitutions.
