The United States is a global outlier in its reliance on life sentences as a remedy for violent crime. More than 200,000 people are locked behind bars for life, according to new research by The Sentencing Project. We can’t solve our nation’s mass incarceration crisis without ending the culture of extreme sentencing that makes life sentences viable. The Sentencing Project calls for the abolition of life-without-parole sentences and a 20-year cap on all life sentences.
Our webinar highlighted the latest research and advocacy around life imprisonment, including information on race, women and the elderly life-sentenced population.
