Marc Mauer presented a webinar on his report, The Changing Racial Dynamics of Women’s Incarceration, which documented the dramatic shift in the racial composition of the women’s prison population from 2000 to 2009. During this period the rate of incarceration for black women declined by 31%, while rates for white women rose by 47% and for Hispanic women by 23%.
Mauer discussed the reasons for these changes and offered recommendations for policy and practice reforms to address racial disparities in incarceration.
